Biofactory

BIOFACTORY is a project implemented by the Reaktor Association, and supported by the Novi Sad Foundation – European Capital of Culture 2022, within the Danube Sea program arc.

Biofactory is an artistic production in the form of experiments, where a completely new, biodegradable and sustainable material is used and processed – SCOBY, short for symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. The young visual artist Adrienn Ujhazi is the first artist in Serbia who bases her creativity on growing biological and plant material SCOBY. The main purpose of this material is to offer alternative solutions in order to preserve the environment, as, for example, to replace plastic as the biggest polluter of the planet, but its great potential in replacing textiles has also been discovered.

We promoted the SCOBY material as part of the Biofactory project through several stages: through workshops for making materials in which art high school students participated; through the presentation of the concept of biodegradable design, through several independent and group exhibitions and “site-specific” actions, panel discussions and at the very end by showing a documentary film about the processes created during the duration of the project itself. Numerous artists and experts, both foreign and domestic, helped us in this: curators, designers, art agents, microbiologists, architects. Together we questioned ecological and contemporary practices in the field of bio art and design and presented some artistic and commercial solutions offered by SCOBY material.

The Biofabrika project has opened a new chapter on the topic of bio art and ecology, which we want to further develop and explore through cooperation with other organizations and institutions from the same or similar field of activity, as well as involvement in new projects that deal with strengthening bio art and ecological awareness of citizens.
