Textile (Tactile) Newspaper
– the only inclusive newspaper
The “Textile (Tactile) Newspaper” project was created through the collaboration of visual artist Milica Dukić with the teachers and users of the “Dr. Milan Petrović” school in Novi Sad, a school whose mission is the education and upbringing of children and adults with all kinds of developmental disabilities, throughout their entire lives. The project involves the creation of textile objects modeled after daily newspapers from Serbia (Blic, Večernje novosti, Danas), Hungary (Blikk) and Poland (Super express), thereby problematizing the quantity and quality of (visual) information we get by flipping through/reading the daily press. He also points to broader social issues, such as the non-inclusivity of daily newspapers and mass culture in general, the inclusivity of contemporary art, creative contribution through participatory projects, the benefits + cooperation of educational and cultural institutions with artists and the independent scene. Textile newspapers achieve this by being inclusive on several levels: through the process of creating textile objects (users of the school directly participate in the creation of a contemporary work of art through the selection of embroidery techniques, thread colors, stylization of visual materials, making embroidery), by the fact that the embroidered “pages” can for the blind and visually impaired to experience, as well as by exhibiting and presenting in several branches of the City Library in Novi Sad, which brings contemporary art directly to their users.
